Recommended Reading Level:
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12, adult
Theme: Through an
unexpected source, a young man finds the meaning of love and
selflessness.
Summary: Landon
Carter, now a grown man, looks back on a most important year in
his life. An average senior in high school, with average dreams
for the future, Landon is thrown together for the annual holiday
play with the oddest girl in school, the daughter of a devout
Baptist minister. Jamie shows him a more meaningful world than he
had ever dreamed of and a tragic love story unfolds.
Strengths: As told in
the first person, we have insight into the most important
characters that sway your feelings to match Landon's own. And we
are reminded how powerful first love can be.
Weaknesses: The first
chapter is a bit narrative, providing many details that you think
unnecessary, but later realize play an important part of his
story.
