Theme: Though fraught with
perils on every side, the Christian journey remains the path to glory.
Summary: Christian travels
from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Along the way he discovers
both the helps and pitfalls encountered by all Christians in their own
spiritual journeys.
Strengths: Although the
book is 300 years old, it remains filled to the brim with remarkable insights
into the Christian walk. For the serious Christian who truly desires a
closer walk with God, this book is an invaluable resource.
Weaknesses: Because of the
devotional intent and allegorical nature of the book, the theology is not
always completely accurate. Don’t try to write your systematic theology
from Pilgrim’s Progress. Use the book in the way it was intended. It is
meant for devotional purposes, not necessarily academic ones.
Other Notes: The edition
I am recommending is a revision of the original text. Normally, revisions
of this sort take away from the original beauty of the language and end
up spoiling a good piece of literature. Wiersbe’s edition, however, remains
faithful to the text and consciously seeks to retain Bunyan’s simple style
and form. The additional notes and annotations are also helpful in understanding
Bunyan’s culture and perspective.
