Recommended Reading Level: Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Theme: Bennett has gathered stories and poems from around the world to illustrate the virtues of self-discipline, compassion, responsibility, friendship, work, courage, perseverance, honesty, loyalty and faith.
Summary: Each of the virtues listed above make up a section in the book. Under each virtue Bennett lists stories that progress from the easy to the more difficult. Children can read through a virtue and push themselves to go as far as their reading and comprehension level will allow.
Strengths: This book contains excellent, classic stories that are essential for developing moral literacy in children. Bennett’s comments at the beginning of the stories are also instructive.
Weaknesses: Bennett lists some Bible stories as examples of moral values. When he does so he drifts toward moralism. Children should be reminded that the Bible is much more than simply a series of moral stories.
Other Notes: This is an excellent book to have available for children to browse through. Leave it on a coffee table somewhere, allowing children to pick it up, read a story and set it back down again.
